Read With Purpose: What I learned After 500+ Hours of Reading
Reading teaches you to live boldly.
It teaches you to reject what you don’t need. And to live the
life you want.
Without it, it’s hard to pick your own path (the authentic
one).
Not because you’ll lack knowledge.
But because of something different.
Something that most readers don’t do.
Highlighting.
If you are a reader, you need to pick ideas out of what you
read.
Here’s the trick
You can’t remember everything in a book.
This means you have to choose what’s important.
Try this next time you read: pick one or two ideas out of
what you read and try to remember them.
The trick is to focus on a few ideas. When you have those
few ideas, you’ll be able to implement them into your life and incorporate them
into who you are.
- Scan for the best.
- Highlight the best.
- Use the best.
Reading is useful, but not because of knowledge
In life, you’ll need to make sacrifices.
But in making a sacrifice you’ll face uncertainty.
The thing with reading is that you never know which chapter
will have the biggest impact on you.
You need to guess.
Reading will force you to reject information that could help
you.
In this way, it helps you make though choices. The book is
practice for life.
There are only a few lucky sentences that you can keep. And
so you need to chose them carefully.
And when you’ll need to make a hard decision is real life,
it’ll be that much easier.
You’ll have a lot of practice before you.
Because having wisdom is nice, but what do you do with it?
Keep these ideas close to your heart.
Note them. Write them.
In the notes app on your phone, in the book, on the wall.
And everytime you need a reminder, go check it. Repetition will anchor the info in your memory.
Then, act as closely as possible with the new information.
And one day, with both memory and acts,
it will become part of who you are.
That’s how you gain the skills necessary for life.
Reading can teach you
How to reject the extra fluff in your life
How to apply and use information productively
So there’s really 0 reasons not to use the ideas you read.
